Aside from tasting whiskies neat or with a splash of Consol Glass water to release the flavours, visitors to Whisky Live - in Pretoria from 4 - 6 May at Brooklyn Square and in Durban from 1 - 3 June - will also have the opportunity to taste a variety of whisky cocktails which display the versatility of whisky. There really is a flavour for everyone, even those who may need to be eased into the world of whisky by first sampling it in a cocktail.
Black Bottle Old Fashioned
The curiously rich and delicately smoky Black Bottle will be serving up Rob Roy and Old Fashioned cocktails made with flare by bartender extraordinaire and owner of SIP Exclusive, Owen O’Rielly. There seems to be a nostalgia for the simplicity of these drinks that are reminiscent of the glory of yesteryear - think Great Gatsby, trilby hats at a jaunty angle, cigarette holders in gloved hands and fringed dresses. Whether you're new to whisky or well into your journey with the golden liquid, there is nothing wrong with the well-made Old Fashioned. Enjoy watching it being made with flare and finesse, find a quiet spot and sip it with your eyes closed to see what all the fuss is about.
Consol Whisky-inspired Pop-up Cocktail Bar
Also harking back to a time before our modern day 'throwaway' culture, Consol has partnered with Whisky Live to bring the versatility of glass, paired with the versatility of whisky, to life. Aside from every visitor receiving a Consol Glass bottle of water on entry (we are sure that we aren't the only ones who think that water tastes better when it's sipped from a glass bottle), visitors are also invited to stop by the Consol pop-up whisky-inspired cocktail bar for a complimentary cocktail. Consol's message: reliable as it is versatile, whisky cocktails are best served in glass. We couldn't agree more. They will be offering a different cocktail each night so visitors can expect to receive one of the following exciting elixirs: Passionfruit and Vanilla Whiskey Sours, Grapefruit and Honey Julep or a Whisky Mule.

There are loads of whiskies at Whisky Live for tasting and most of them are great in a cocktail!
Although Monkey Shoulder won't be serving up cocktails, we thought it would be remiss of us not to mention that this mix of three Single Malts - Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie - is a uniquely flavoured whisky, that loves company and shows its well balanced versatility in cocktails. We love their names like Malt Jockey, described as 'a bareback ride into decadence') and Boulevardier No. 3 (which tastes like 'a bikini-clad snowmobile ride into a volcano'). Taste it on its own at Whisky Live, then head home to experiment to your heart's content!
Tullamore D.E.W - the original triple distilled, triple blend whiskey, known the world over for its smooth and gentle complexity - also embraces cocktail culture. Their motto is that true characters understand that there isn’t just one way to do anything in life. So they have created an inspiring and daring cocktail blend to appeal to the more free-spirited character. The Dewlep cocktail is a simple blend of fresh mint leaves, which give the drink a really fresh aroma, vanilla sugars and a dash of peach bitters to give the natural vanilla flavours in Tullamore D.E.W. Irish whiskey that extra zest.
Scottish Leader offers an interesting combination of honey and smoke is sure to give visitors a new perspective on blends with Original, Signature and the 12 Year Old available for tasting, as is or with a splash of water to release the whisky's flavours. This is another one we think visitors will enjoy experimenting with at home! Here's a recipe for the Scottish Leader Signature Honey, Apple and Mint Cocktail:
Place the mint leaves into a cocktail shaker. Pour the honey or honey syrup over the leaves. Using a muddle stick, press the mint leaves and honey together. Fill the shaker with cubed ice. Pour the Scottish Leader Signature whisky and apple juice over the mixture. Add a dash of fresh lemon juice. Close the cocktail shaker and shake vigorously for 20 seconds. Fill a short glass with cubed ice and pour the mixture over the ice. Garnish with a sprig of mint.
