Whisky Live heads to Cape Town

By Whisky Live Staff 27-03-2018

Each year, Whisky lovers - novices and connoisseurs alike, gather in solidarity for their love of this golden nectar at the annual Whisky Live Celebrations. The Whisky Live Celebrations kick off in Cape Town from 12 – 14 April at The Lookout. Whisky Aficiona1dos can look forward to a wide range of Whiskies to suit their palates, whether it be a Scottish Single Malt or a Blend, American or Irish Whiskey, Taiwanese or even perhaps something local and proudly South African…

Doors open at 18h00 and the Celebration ends at 22h00. Tickets can be purchased online at Ticketpro as well as at the door.

What’s New

With wide arms we welcome four newcomers to the Cape Town event. Hailing from Taiwan, Kavalan returns after a two year hiatus with its youthful and full flavoured single malts. The Quiet Man is brand new to the Celebration: Triple distilled in traditional Irish whiskey pot stills and matured in oak barrels, this whiskey offers an ultra-smooth finish. If you enjoy a bold Bourbon; Blanton’s Single Barrel, voted by Jim Murray's Whisky Bible as "Liquid Gold" and the Blanton’s Gold Edition, created for discerning connoisseurs who appreciate exceptional smoothness and clean finish in their bourbon whiskey are a must to taste. Last but not least; the smooth and lushly finished Buffalo Trace Straight Bourbon Whiskey joins the American mix at this year’s Celebrations.

Malts of Speyside

Speyside, the most densely populated whisky region in the world, is the centre for whisky in Scotland. Named after the river Spey, many of the distilleries use water straight from the river Spey in their production process. Scotch from Speyside is considered Scotland’s most complex; and is known for its sweetness, elegant flavours and aromas. Taste the rich and sweet notes of The Macallan, or the light and grassy flavours of The Glenlivet and the fruity flavour of Aultmore, Aberlour and Glen Grant; all of which will be the perfect start to your Whisky Live Celebration journey. Interestingly, Speyside accounts for 60% of Scotland’s Single Malt Whisky Production. Who Knew?

Brilliant Blends & Crafty Cocktails

Patrons who are looking for smoky, sweet and floral flavoured blends can enjoy smooth operators such as Scottish Leader combining smoke and honey. The Scottish Leader 12 Year Old recently won Gold at the 2018 World Whiskies Awards! Enthusiasts can yet again look forward to the elegantly balanced smoky and fruity flavours of Black Bottle; with notes of sweet oak and cinnamon.

Tommy Dewar had two passions: whisky and chickens. Apart from making the award winning Dewar’s Blended Scotch, legend has it that Tommy raised a collection of pedigree chickens which laid some of the best eggs, bringing the Dewar’s Scotch Egg Club to life. You’ve got to see it to believe it!

Our Glass partners, Consol join us with their pop-up whisky-inspired kegtail bar and offer all patrons a complimentary cocktail. Reliable as it is versatile, whisky cocktails are best served in glass! Consol will also be providing all ticket holders with a bottle of Consol Still Water, naturally, in glass!

Whiskies of Islay

Fancy yourself a smoky dram? For lovers of all things Peat, the aromatic and harmoniously balanced Highland Park with its strong Viking roots, is back at the Whisky Live Celebration. For a subtly peated whisky, Bunnahabhain Islay Single Malt will definitely not disappoint. The legendary Master of the Quaich; Mr Whisky himself; Pierre Meintjes will be presenting Bunnahabhain with his world class storytelling and whisky tasting advice.

A Dash of The Irish

An impressive range of Irish whiskey will be available for tasting at this year’s Celebration. The Pogues; the whiskey named after the Irish Celtic rock band; was launched in 2015 and rebels against the norm with a blend of 50% Irish Grain Whiskey and 50% Irish Single Malt Whiskey. The award winning triple distilled West Cork will be showcased alongside The Pogues. Visit the Irish Pot Stills of Midleton stand and sample the likes of Green Spot, Yellow Spot, Powers John’s Lane and Redbreast. For the Jameson fan, Jameson Caskmates will be available to taste. This whiskey is finished in stout-seasoned whiskey casks with notes of cocoa, coffee and butterscotch.

Local is Lekker

Taste South Africa’s internationally award-winning whiskies, Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky and Three Ships Whisky in the company of Master Distiller Andy Watts and Distillery Manager Jeff Green. Andy Watts took the title of Rest of the World Master Distiller/Master Blender of the Year at the 2018 Whisky Magazine’s Icons of Whisky awards held in London recently. The whiskies are made at the James Sedgwick Distillery, Africa’s only commercial whisky distillery, situated in the picturesque town of Wellington, well-known for the spectacular Bain’s Kloof Pass and scenic beauty of the surrounding mountains.

All the way from the US of A

A whisky festival is not complete without some good old American Whiskey. Jack Daniel’s returns to Whisky Live and offers Jack Daniel’s Old No7 to Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel and Gentleman Jack. Made in Kentucky and enjoyed worldwide, spicy newcomer Buffalo Trace has an outstanding aroma that is rich, complex, and smooth in taste.
