Calling all Whisky Aficionados in Pretoria. The Whisky Live Celebration will be visiting you in May. Menlyn Park Shopping Centre - Level 5 Parkade plays host to the Pretoria Celebration from 17 – 19 May. Whisky novices and connoisseurs alike can look forward to a wide range of Whiskies to suit their palates, whether it be a Scottish Single Malt or a Blend, American or Irish Whiskey, Speyside or even perhaps something local and proudly South African…
Doors open at 18h00 and the Celebration ends at 22h00. Tickets can be purchased online at Ticketpro as well as at the door.
What’s on the Agenda
For those looking for something different to do for ladies / guys night out, Whisky Live has a lot to offer for the beginner to the well-seasoned enthusiast from whisky inspired Kegtails; mouth-watering biltong and droewors from Just Biltong and last but not least, the NEAT ultimate spirits tasting glass will be available to purchase!
With World Whisky Day on Saturday the 19th of May, it is the best way for everyone to try a dram and celebrate the water of life with the gang! Patrons also stand a chance to win a whisky prize by entering the #Selfie competition and taking a SELFIE with the iconic #WhiskyLiveBottle throughout the Celebration.
Each ticket includes a whisky tasting glass, 16 tasting vouchers and a bottle of Consol Still Water.
1 – 4 vouchers are exchanged for a tasting. Vouchers are based on the retail value of the whisky and more vouchers are available for purchase.
An onsite Deli with convenient ready to eat meals, soft drinks and coffee to keep one fuelled throughout the Celebration and give the designated drivers something else to chew on other than your ear!
If you enjoy a bold Bourbon; Blanton’s Single Barrel, voted by Jim Murray's Whisky Bible as "Liquid Gold" is a must to taste. Last but not least; the smooth and lushly finished Buffalo Trace Straight Bourbon Whiskey joins the American mix at this year’s Celebrations.
The International Award Winning Indian Single Malt; Paul John, crafted with barley from the foothills of the Himalayas combined with indigenous Indian ingredients from the bays of Goa offers a range of whiskies that are creamy; spicy; fruity and florally.
Douglas Laing specialise in craft Scotch Whiskies. Containing some of the very best Single Malts from their respective regions, Timorous Beastie from the Highlands, Scallywag from Speyside, Rock Oyster from the Islands and Big Peat from Islay, Douglas Laing’s Remarkable Regional Malts deliver the Ultimate Distillation of Scotland’s Malt Whisky regions.
Drayman’s Highveld Single Malt Whisky, hailing straight out of Silverton Pretoria is another fantastic local whisky worthy of a dram or two and is sure to be a hit with Proudly South African fans.
Speyside, the most densely populated whisky region in the world, is the centre for whisky in Scotland. Named after the river Spey, many of the distilleries use water straight from the river Spey in their production process. Scotch from Speyside is considered Scotland’s most complex; and is known for its sweetness, elegant flavours and aromas. Taste the rich and sweet notes of The Macallan, or the light and the fruity flavour of Aultmore and Glen Grant; which will be the perfect start to your Whisky Live Celebration journey. Brilliant Blends & Crafty Cocktails
Patrons who are looking for smoky, sweet and floral flavoured blends can enjoy smooth operators such as Scottish Leader combining smoke and honey. Challenging Perspectives is the luxuriously silky and rich Scottish Leader 12-year-old whisky, the flagship of the internationally renowned collection and has been awarded a prestigious gold medal by the World Whiskies Awards in the UK, during a first round tasting.
Tommy Dewar had two passions: whisky and chickens. Apart from making the award winning Dewar’s Blended Scotch, legend has it that Tommy raised a collection of pedigree chickens which laid some of the best eggs, bringing the Dewar’s Scotch Egg Club to life. You’ve got to see it to believe it!
Our Glass partners, Consol join us with their pop-up whisky-inspired Kegtail bar and offer all patrons a complimentary cocktail. Reliable as it is versatile, whisky cocktails are best served in glass! Consol will also be providing all ticket holders with a bottle of Consol Still Water, naturally, in glass!
Island Style Whisky
Fancy yourself a smoky dram? For lovers of all things Peat, the aromatic and harmoniously balanced Highland Park with its strong Viking roots, is back at the Whisky Live Celebration. For a subtly peated whisky, Bunnahabhain Islay Single Malt will definitely not disappoint. The legendary Master of the Quaich; Mr Whisky himself; Pierre Meintjes will be presenting Bunnahabhain with his world class storytelling and whisky tasting advice.
Renowned for being the world’s richest single malt Scotch, Laphroaig’s award-winning family of whiskies consists of a selection of Core, Travel Retail and Rare expressions.
For those after a heavily peated whisky, Ardbeg has a turfy smoke and sea spray character predominant in most bottlings.
A Dash of The Irish
An impressive range of Irish whiskey will be available for tasting at this year’s Celebration. The Pogues; the whiskey named after the Irish Celtic rock band; was launched in 2015 and rebels against the norm with a blend of 50% Irish Grain Whiskey and 50% Irish Single Malt Whiskey. The award winning triple distilled West Cork will be showcased alongside The Pogues. Visit the Irish Pot Stills of Midleton stand and sample the likes of Green Spot, Yellow Spot, Powers John’s Lane and Redbreast. For the Jameson fan, Jameson Caskmates will be available to taste. This whiskey is finished in stout-seasoned whiskey casks with notes of cocoa, coffee and butterscotch.
Local is Lekker
Taste South Africa’s internationally award-winning whiskies, Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky and Three Ships Whisky in the company of Master Distiller Andy Watts. Andy Watts was awarded as the Global Icons of Whisky Master Distiller Master Blender at the 2018 Whisky Magazine’s Icons of Whisky awards held in London in March.
Three Ships was awarded DOUBLE GOLD medals for both the Premium Select 5 Year Old & Bourbon Cask Finish blends at the 2018 San Francisco World Spirits Awards held recently in April.
The whiskies are made at the James Sedgwick Distillery, Africa’s only commercial whisky distillery, situated in the picturesque town of Wellington, well-known for the spectacular Bain’s Kloof Pass and scenic beauty of the surrounding mountains.
All the way from the US of A
A whisky festival is not complete without some good old American Whiskey. Jack Daniel’s returns to Whisky Live and offers Jack Daniel’s Old No7 to Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel and Gentleman Jack. Made in Kentucky and enjoyed worldwide, spicy newcomer Buffalo Trace has an outstanding aroma that is rich, complex, and smooth in taste.
Another American hit is Maker’s Mark Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey with hints of sweet vanilla and notes of cinnamon and almond.
Whisky meets Tech
Launched at the Whisky Live Festival in Sandton in November 2015, the Whizzky App allows users to find more information on any whisky by simply scanning the whisky label. Users can also add and save their favourite whisky, add their own tasting notes as well as catch up on the latest whisky news. This free-to-use app is available to download for both Android and IOS devices. Read more about Whizzky here. General Access tickets will cost R230 from Ticketpros.co.za, and R260 at the door: ticket price includes a whisky tasting glass, 16 tasting vouchers and a complimentary bottle of Consol Still Water. For those taking one for the team, Designated Driver tickets will cost R115 online as well as at the door and includes a bottle of Consol Still Water.
