Black Meerkat’s Old Town gin was launched on 15 December 2016. It is distilled and bottled at New Harbour Distillery in Woodstock, Cape Town. The name "Black Meerkat" is a combination of creators Jayde Maasdorp’s and Mike Sayers’ favourite colour and animal.
Unlike most gins currently available in South Africa, this one is an 11-botanical Old Tom-style gin – a style that enjoyed huge popularity in the 18th century. It is currently the first and only Old Tom gin available in South Africa.
Slightly sweeter than London Dry and drier but less heavy than Dutch Genever, Old Tom gin bridges the gap between these two styles and is often called the “missing link”. "Old Town Gin" was named by merging Old Tom and Cape Town (Cape Town being the oldest town in SA).
Unlike the traditional Old Tom recipe, though, Black Meerkat’s Old Town gin has no added sugar or artificial sweeteners. Liquorice root, indigenous rose geranium, star anise and pineapple sage have been used to replicate the signature sweetness of Old Tom gin. The end recipe also includes juniper, coriander seeds, cassia, almonds, lemon peel, orange peel and angelica root.
Black Meerkat Gin currently has 17 stockists, 15 of which are located on the Western Cape. It is packaged in a round, tapered bottle of clear glass. A black, textured wrap around label displays the word GIN in big gold letters, but the name of the brand – and of the gin itself – is tiny piquing the curiosity of would-be consumers
